When you use the teach pendant or button box to play or stop a part, both Beacon and the robot rely on the currently loaded program to ensure both applications can communicate with each other and perform the requested action.

Sometimes the wrong program can get loaded on the teach pendant, requiring you switch to the Beacon Welding program. The steps to do this differ by PolyScope version.

In this article, you'll learn:

Load Beacon Welding Program on PolyScope 5

In 2025, Universal Robot's introduced PolyScope X, a new major version to their operating system as a successor to PolyScope 5. PolyScope X requires new controller hardware. This section is specific to PolyScope 5.

If your Cobot Welder is not opening the Beacon Welding program upon initial power up, you may need to add the default program to the installation file so that it knows what to open.

Switch to the Default Installation

If the installation listed on the top of the teach pendant does not say default then you need to switch to it before proceeding.

  1. On the teach pendant at the top-center, tap Open, then choose Installation.

  2. When the file browser opens, navigate to the home folder and select default.installation.

  3. Tap Open.

  4. If prompted about a Safety Configuration, choose Apply and restart.

  5. If prompted to update the Program Installation, choose Use for now.

Watch the video below that shows how to switch to the default installation file.

Configure the Default Program

If the robot is in Automatic mode, switch to Manual mode before proceeding.

With the default installation loaded and teach pendant in manual mode, you can now configure the installation to load the Beacon Welding program on startup.

  1. On the teach pendant at the top-left, tap Installation.

  2. In the left-hand menu, expand General section then choose Startup.

  3. Ensure the option Load Default Program is checked.

  4. Tap the text box (it may say DEFAULT.urp) below the checkbox option to open a file browser window.

  5. When the file browser opens, navigate the folders to select applications -> com.hirebotics.beacon.welding -> welding_program.urp

  6. Tap Open.

  7. In the top-center menu, tap Save, choose Save Installation as, and resave it as default.

  8. In the top-center menu, tap Open, choose Program.

  9. When the file browser opens, navigate the folders to select applications -> com.hirebotics.beacon.welding -> welding_program.urp

  10. Tap Open.

  11. Wait for the robot to apply the Beacon Welding safety configuration.

Watch the video below that shows how to update the default installation file.
