How to Update the Robot Operating System (PolyScope 5)

Update PolyScope 5, your robot's operating system (also called URSoftware or robot software), using a USB drive and the teach pendant.

Written by Doug Ayers

This article is for robots running PolyScope 5. If your robot runs PolyScope X, see How to Update the Robot Operating System (PolyScope X).

Important

For security, never use a USB drive or files from untrusted sources. If in doubt, contact your IT department or Beacon Support.

PolyScope 5 is your robot's operating system — the software you see on the teach pendant. This guide shows you how to update it from a USB drive.

Hirebotics tests each PolyScope 5 release. When we approve a new version, we update the download link in this article.

Before You Start

  • Have a computer to download the update file.

  • Have a USB drive to transfer the file to the robot.

Check the Current Version

  1. On the teach pendant, open the menu.

PolyScope 5 home screen with the menu open

  2. Tap About.

  3. Note the Version number, then tap Close.

Does the Version already match the version in Download the Update below?

If yes, your robot is up to date — you can stop here.

Download the Update

  1. On a computer, download the PolyScope 5 update file. This file installs PolyScope 5.25.2.

  2. Copy the file to your USB drive.

Important

Do not install a PolyScope version older than the one on your robot. Downgrading is not supported and can cause the robot to stop working properly.

Install the Update

  1. Insert the USB drive into the port at the top of the teach pendant.

  2. If the teach pendant is in Automatic mode, switch it to Manual mode and enter the operator password (default operator).

  3. Open the menu.

PolyScope 5 home screen with the menu open

  4. Tap Settings.

  5. Tap System. Then tap Update. Then tap Search.

  6. Tap the PolyScope update you want to install, then tap Update.

  7. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the update.

The teach pendant screen may turn black and show messages while the update installs. The robot restarts on its own several times. You may hear the arm's brakes lock and release.

  8. When the robot returns to the normal screen, initialize the robot arm to complete the update. See How to Initialize the Robot Arm (PolyScope 5).

If your welder is a Miller Deltaweld or OTC Welbee, run the Beacon eth1 Network Magic Script after the update. The script reconnects the robot and the welder. If you skip it, the welder may show communication errors.

How to Verify

Open the menu, then tap About. The Version should show the new version number.

Update the Beacon URCap

A PolyScope update may also need a newer Beacon URCap.
